Last year, Sunny’s dad, Harish, was diagnosed with high-risk MDS, a rare blood cancer, which sadly has now progressed to acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).
She reflects: “One day we were planning trips, family dinners, retirement plans. The next, we were handed a leaflet and told to “process it.”
The only thing that can save him is a stem cell transplant, and Harish urgently needs to find a matching donor.
“Watching someone you love slowly lose their energy, their strength, their spark… it’s unbearable. The hardest part is knowing medicine alone isn’t enough. He needs one matching stranger to say yes.”
“My dad is my best friend – he is the kindest man with the heart of gold who always seems to have time for everybody else and simply adores his family and his grandkids.”
For Harish, who is of Indian heritage, finding a match is even more difficult because matching is closely linked to ethnicity. Yet only 16% of the UK stem cell register is made up of people from ethnic minority backgrounds.
Your decision to register could mean more for time for Harish to spend with his wife of 50 years, his grandkids who adore him, and a family that isn’t ready to say goodbye.
