Why is the age range different for different blood cancer charities?

We cannot speak on behalf of other blood cancer charities, however, DKMS’ age range is the widest possible and aligns with the WMDA (World Marrow Donor Association) standards. We have seen frequently that older donors are chosen as the right match for a patient when no younger donor is available. However, the preference of transplant physicians are for younger donors, if they are available. This is the reason for DKMS to lower the starting age range to 16 years.
