Stem Cell Donation

Is bone marrow donation painful?

Most donors describe bone marrow donation as uncomfortable rather than intensely painful.

You may experience localised pain for a few days after the procedure. This is normal and caused by the wound, which often feels like bruising.

For most people:

  • The pain is manageable with standard pain relief
  • Symptoms improve significantly within a few days
  • Most return to normal activities within days to a couple of weeks
