Are there bone marrow donation risks?

Yes. Like with any medical procedure, bone marrow and stem cell donation carry some risks, but serious complications are uncommon in healthy donors.

Common short term risks and symptoms include:

  • Pain or soreness in the lower back or hips
  • Fatigue
  • Bruising
  • Temporary anaemia
  • General risks related to anaesthesia

More serious complications are rare overall.
