“A blood stem cell donation is the only chance of survival Damary’s got and he needs a match by Christmas. It’s not just about helping my son out – there are other children in his position – cancer doesn’t discriminate. Even if you can’t help my son, there’s a chance you could help somebody else.”
Damary’s dad, Tony.

When he was nine, Damary was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia – a type of blood cancer that inhibits the development of his blood. It was a devastating diagnosis for his whole family. Being told that you, or a loved one, have any type of cancer can be one of the hardest things you’ll ever hear.
Damary has been undergoing chemotherapy for the last three years, with the hope that he would go into remission in July 2018. But, unfortunately, Damary has relapsed. He now he urgently needs a blood stem cell donation to survive. And, his doctors say he needs it by Christmas.
Only one in three people will find a matching donor in their family. So, like Damary, they must instead rely on a selfless stranger. That’s why we’re here. We find lifesavers – like you – and match them to people in urgent need of blood stem cell donations.
Damary faces an especially difficult challenge because, like him, his matching donor is most likely to have African-Caribbean heritage. And there just aren’t enough African-Caribbean people on the UK blood stem cell donor registry. Currently African-Caribbean people make up just 1.6% of the available UK donors.
